For all of those struggling with, on a roll with, fine-tuning, needing ideas, or hell... anyone who isn't even participating but are around to offer quick insta-beta services or general support:

Narnia Big Bang Write-In. Tomorrow, February 10th. 9 PM EST. All are welcome. You can actively participate through conversation, or just check-in occasionally (because you're busy writing... right?)

We could either do the chat room or skype... any preferences?

**UPDATE**

For those interested in a group skype chat, find me under my LJ name! I'm going to try to get things going starting at 8:45 PM EST. (For those I've skyped with before, I'm using a different account just for this, so you'll have to add me again.)

Write-In.

Hello LJ peoples!

It seems to be quiet around here, lately. My excuse is that work throughout January has been awfully busy, and personal life has been (thankfully) fun and distracting. Needless to say, my poor NBB has been neglected lately...

SO. A proposal. If anyone is interested, I would like to schedule a write-in—a set time where several of us will dedicate a set number of hours (3 or 4) on a certain evening this week to dedicate all our time to work on our NBBs.

We can all keep in contact for occasional check-ins, progress updates, questions, quick beta-ing and general moral support and such via twitter, or g-chat, or skype, or the chat room, or whatever floats peoples' boats.

Anyone interested in joining? And if so, what evening and times would you be interested in devoting your full attention towards your NBB?

Status.

Hello all you peoples in LJ land!

I'm procrastinating from writing, even though today is a good day to do so. It's cool outside, overcast, I have the full day off from work (the first in nearly two weeks) and most importantly...internet!

On the writing front... at first, and I cannot lie, I was a tad disappointed by the NBB extension. Deadlines! Must need deadlines! But the past two weeks, I've been locked in a dark, internetless box full of distractions left and right. And though I'm in supervisory mode and can check out to write as needed, it just didn't happen. So, in short... yay, extension! THANK GOODNESS!

Things have eased up a bit this week, so daytimes are again available to tap-tap-tap away on my little keyboard. And I really do want to finish this first pass of the story by the end of the month. However, my story keeps inching longer and longer... I've been "12K more to go!" for the past 3K words, it seems! Blrgh.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

It's been a busy couple of weeks. I went back to the Midwest for the holidays and am staying at a crowded house full of family and holiday distractions. On top of that, we had an open house to prepare for, so things have been non-stop.

I have finally completed my Christmas fic! I fully intended for it to go out Christmas Eve. Ah well, it didn't. But at least I was able to give it the attention I wanted to. It did end up longer and more introspective than originally planned... but oh well.

Behold, I bring you Hail to the Days.

This story takes place after Dichotomy, but before Splintered. It is meant to set up a few things for my Narnia Big Bang, Fuel to Fire, and other stories and plots and whatnots to potentially follow. Familiarity with both previously published stories is highly recommended!

Title comes from the traditional English carol known by either the same name (All Hail to the Days), or its more popular one To Drive the Cold Winter Away. Full lyrics may be found here.

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith for the beta and [livejournal.com profile] rthstewart for her constant moral support!

So, the 3 Sentence Ficathon is happening. And at first I avoided it, thinking:

"Think of the distraction it would be from your NBB, snitch!"

But then I thought:

"Think of the distraction it would be from your NBB, snitch!"

So, I dove in.
And here's what I've done so far... )

Scrivener.

Well, the outline and word count update are in on my NBB! I did not get near enough written in November as I would have liked, but I was up to my ears in distractions it seemed. I am, as the picture indicates, about 70% done of my anticipated word count, which I think is still going to be slightly higher than the projected 56,000. Of course. Keep in mind though that this was a WIP when I signed up, and I've only added about 15,000 in the past month, despite using it as a NaNoWriMo... yeah, kinda failed at that.

Plus, it doesn't help that I have about 6,000 words written of a sequel to my NBB, and another 2,000 for a holiday-themed story, which may just be a prequel to the NBB. Yikes! So, I HAVE been writing, I just have my priorities all jumbled up.

I very much look forward to getting it in shape enough to share with a beta or two... I'm dying for outside opinions, but it's just too early still. And as soon as I'm done with this first pass, I will sign up for the artwork portion, if there's still time to!

In the meantime, I did some experimenting with [livejournal.com profile] metonomia and [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith about how is a good way to use Scrivener for beta purposes. I used to work strictly in Pages, with my research in Numbers, but considering NO one has or uses those programs and use Word instead, I would find myself stuck in converting/exporting hell. And that would lead to multiple files and versions on my end and just... ugh.

However! Using the beauty of both commenting and revision mode (where you can mark edits in different colors... each pass can has its own color!) in combination with the snapshot function and saving things in a Dropbox.... voila! One file, shared, clearly edited, easy to update, and more importantly, easy to compare revisions.

The only thing that Scrivener lacks for me is the option to make charts and tables. I NEED charts and tables, ones I can edit how I'd like. The "outliner" mode is nice and all, but it's still limiting in what it can track. Plus, I miss the NaNoWriMo progress graph... I didn't realize how much I relied on that thing! It would be beautiful to have something visual tracking a complete work within Scrivener.

How's everyone else doing on your NBBs?

Goals.

snitchnipped: (B&W)
Since it worked quite well to list out my goals during the NFE, I'm going to lay out what my intentions are for my NBB. "Putting it out to the world" can be quiet helpful.

November:

Write, write, write. With the help of NaNoWriMo to keep track of my progress (along with my extensive chart I have going in iNumbers, something I'll have to share in my Extended Edition, right [livejournal.com profile] wingedflight21?) I hope to get the vast majority, if not all, of my first pass done this month. My schedule allows for it, with what work I do have primarily landing on the weekends. It's a pity that that's when it has and is forecasted to rain... on the weekends. I'd much rather it rain during the week. Cold and snuggly conditions = perfect writing conditions.

Granted, this stuff is rough. But that matters not, because I really enjoy the ediitng and finessing part much more than the initial "just splurt it out already!" writing time.

My extensive outline is already complete, so I already have a leg-up on the first NBB deadline! Wow, I was never on top of things like this when I was in school... Like, ever.

December:

My second pass. Maybe, maybe reach out to a beta for a second opinion on some scenes. If anything, with my newly found writing habits, this will be the time in which I'll add more detail, if anything. Which I don't mind... I'm learning to embrace that this is my writing style, and if that scares readers off, then so be it. So far, my work schedule is very, very light for the month (yet I'm getting the bulk of my pay that month, so score!!) so that allows for much tea drinking and red-penning.

The kicker is leaving town to go back to the midwest half-way through the month. I just visited there a month ago and learned that it definitely is NOT good writing conditions there. Little to no privacy, but more importantly, no writing sofa. I HAVE to have a sofa from which to write on.

On the other hand, that's where my cat is. Orange fuzzy Maine Coon best friend snuggled up next to you IS a good writing condition. Also, real, honest to goodness winter weather. Another good writing condition. So, maybe I can get more done than planned.

ALSO. This is the deadline to sign up as an artist and a beta, and I would love to do both! I'm holding off on signing up on both until after November is done, though.

January:

This is when it gets tricky. I kick into full gear on the 2nd of the month with "real work" and will be busy pretty much throughout, which is why I want to get stuff done early. I really want the story to be 90% done at this time and to have a good dialogue going with a beta.

I would like January to be the time to make the half-dozen passes it requires to catch all the small errors, grammatical mistakes, etc. I learned that it took that amount for my NFE, and when I care about something, I can be quite the perfectionist.

That and FORMATTING. I italicize a lot so it's going to take a very, very long time to format. At least that's mindless work...

The bonus to all of this is, the busier I am with "real life," the more I find writing to be a much-desired escape. Hopefully, this will work in my favor that month, again.

And art and betaing would be just as much of a welcome break, too!

February:

Done. I want it all in the can way before the 2/24 deadline. This month is very much up in the air work-wise. That, and my very first nephew/niece will have been born in late January, and I should make another trip to the midwest at this time to visit him/her. (And my best friend up in the Bay area will also have had a baby girl around the same time, so I should go visit up there, too).

But I would love to spend whatever free time I have with the art and/or beta stuff I have going on.

March:

Treat myself to actually churning out a ~60K piece of writing. I've never done anything like this before, and I would love to do it again (a sequel to this sequel already has a few scenes written—oooooops—but I am interested in trying my hands at an original work, too).

Also, posting begins on my birthday, so yay! I get to read other people's masterpieces after such a loooong wait! That's a treat in itself!

There. Goals laid out. And now to write another 800 words to reach my daily quota, since I didn't write more than 20 words yesterday.

Planning.

So!

Big Bang sign-ups are here, so I went ahead and signed up for my WIP. Hooray! It makes it all the more real and gives me more motivation. I need to have deadlines, otherwise things just don't get done. It's currently at around 20K, but only about half of it is workable, the other half is just story notes. And then there's another 10-15K of random bits and research that aren't factored in the word count.

I'm currently in the process of organizing all my notes. I work best with charts, and have a nifty file in Numbers that has a bio chart of most of the characters so far. It was mainly to keep track of all the Archenlander Lords, whether they are in the story or not.

Another chart divvies up all my scenes and tracks the date, location, weather, word counts, etc. Then I have a section that has a map I sketched out to keep track of said Lords and their lands, and also an area for picture references.

In short, I'm working on my Big Bang Bible. The BBB, if you will.

On top of that, I worked quite a bit on an outline for it. I already had one when I was first starting it, but things had since changed and I figured it'd be easier to start from scratch. And boy, has it helped... so much easier to keep track of the minor plot points and their threads when it's just all right there. Making this thing also forced me to think about plot issues that I was avoiding, and now I feel it's about 85% there. 10 pages of outlining can do that.

My goal is to work ahead of schedule with my own internal deadlines... January is shaping up to be a rather busy month for work and life in general. I would love to just be fine tuning, editing and formatting this thing at that time. Plus, I'm interested in contributing to the art half, but I feel like I should postpone signing up until I'm further along in the writing. Ditto with beta-ing.

So, November is for writing... and this thing is probably going to be around 60K.

Gulp.

I can do it.

ETA:

A coupla more things!

1) It's so exciting to see SO many people signing up for the Mini- and Big Bangs!

2) There are a couple of story summaries posted from other authors that actually meld into my own personal head canon for hypothetical future fics... I'm very interested in what they come up with! It will most likely allow me to not have to write them, which would be a welcome relief.

ETA 2:

Somebody give this little guy a good story home!

I drink too much of it. I drink about 2-3 pots a day. That cannot be good. Thankfully, I've cut down on the caffeinated sorts, but still... I'm tired of running to the bathroom all the time.

OK, things I really need to sit and think long about (and probably write up reference material to build from) before I can really continue any further on my Big Bang WIP:

  1. Archenland Geography. Villages, landscape, and scale. Just... all of it.
  2. An OC, his name, and his function in the story. He needs to be in there, but am not sure how to use him yet. Hmmm.
  3. Profiles on ALL the Lords of Archenland. I already have a good head start, I just need to organize it all and add on to what I have.
  4.  Elephant Names. Why is naming such a chore? I need to come up with at least three more, and it took forever just to decide on one!
  5. Bird Name. I just need one. Well, more, eventually, but am happy to take suggestions for the main one. Anyone? I think it's a raven, the sex matters not.

Things I'm learning so far:
  • It's ten time easier to write males than females. I have no idea why.
  • It's fifty times easier to write characters with a drink in their hand. Why is my "go to" to have them boozing it up?
  • It's a hundred times easier to not write in any order at all. The stuff comes out when it wants to and I shouldn't fight it.

I NEED A BIRD NAME. HELP.

Splinters.

Well, I went ahead and posted on ff.net a little ficlet I wrote a few weeks ago for that short LJ prompt challenge that was going around. It can be found here.

I figured it was a good length and substantial enough, so why not? I made a few slight adjustments, added a sentence here or there (mainly to reach the 1000 word count, just for kicks.)

I'm not posting the other one about Peter, Edmund and their encounter with the Nelian sisters... I'd rather save that one until after the Big Bang one is over and done with!

And speaking of the Big Bang... I cannot wait. I'm holding myself back from working too much on my WIP, even though I know that if I pounded out another 20K before the official sign-ups, I'd still could easily meet the additional 20K required. Perhaps I'm waiting for the prompts? Though most of it is planned out in outline form, there are plenty of blank spots that someone else's prompt could easily slip into.

So, I'm writing about Elephants in my next Narnia fic. No big deal, really, it was just a plot idea I got from a throwaway line from my first story. Which was just an idea because of a new song from one of my favorite bands called "White Elephant."

Well, I can't escape elephants now. At all. They're everywhere. I saw said band in concert on Saturday, and they gave out signed posters....which had elephants all over them:

I come back from said concert to where my car was parked in a sketchy part of downtown (we had carpooled). On the bare, brick wall of a huge warehouse... graffiti of two elephants.

I go to a meeting at a friend's apartment last night. They had two small elephants on their mantle. On the drive back, I passed by the Pink Elephant liquor store.

Went into another meeting today, which happens to be right across the street from the local zoo. Yeah, of course their one big banner was about their Asian elephant exhibit.

So, I was musing about this about 5 minutes ago as I was sitting down with my cup of milky tea to get online. And I check my tumblr... and in the radar is a picture of a guy brushing an elephants tongue.

The elephants are out to get me. They INSIST I give them due diligence. I hope I can.

I'm killing two birds with one stone here, but since I have learned that it is impossible for me to write anything as short as a drabble, I'm sure the length will make up for it just being one story for two people. It fits in with my Dichotomy canon, though it surely could stand alone, and takes place four years after the Narnian half of that story. It comes with a sneak mention of two OCs from the sequel.

For [livejournal.com profile] snacky and [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith, who both wanted something about Lucy, the former with Tumnus, the latter on a journey:

Enjoying a Friday night in since the next week is slowly filling up. With good things, such as meetings and dinners that are all good for The Future. And then I leave town for a week.

In the meantime, what's on the mind writing-wise:

(OK, it will not let me make an LJ  cut without rearranging my entire post.  So, I apologize for the length.)
  • My mind is a bit more wrapped around what I discussed here.  I just needed to splurt that out in order to proceed, I think.

  • Why can't there be consistent Narnian maps anywhere?  I am very much a person that needs a point of reference.   In most maps, Narnia is clear, Calormen is clear, and they just kinda squish Archenland in the middle, but not even consisently.

  • Speaking of maps, I realized that the birthmark on my leg is almost in the same shape as The Lone Islands.  It may actually be more accurate than what's out there.  I have half a mind of uploading a picture of it and start labeling.

  • I've written a song.  And a couple of melodies for other bits of songs in Fuel to Fire.  And then words to go with them.  Like I said... I need points of reference, and it's hard to write words if one doesn't know the tune they go to.  Thankfully, there's Noteflight to the rescue, that will play it after inputting the notes.  An actual song, with guitar chords and drum beat and everything.  Amazeballs.  That's just... craziness.

  • And because I've asked others, but am confident that I will get zero bites since I've only one story under my belt:

The first five people (or zero people) to comment on this post get to request that I write a drabble/ficlet of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their own writing ability level.

  • You can learn a lot about a character just by writing them being drunk.  Stuff came out that I wasn't expecting.  I learned:  "Wow, yeah, that's where we're going now with this.  I guess it was meant to be."  Unexpected turns are unexpected.  And valuable.
  • Note to self:  try writing drunk.
  • There has been a sad history of elephant captivity.

  • Probably the most challenging thing is character naming.  They've got to mean something, fit the characters/world/time-period, and not sound stupid.  My Elephant is not a Mary Sue, so I need to be careful her name doesn't sound like one.

  • It's amazing how much I've written already that I won't even use in this story.  Is that common?  Some of it was intentional, some unintentional.  I discovered one of the first scenes I wrote actually takes place in two years, so it can't be used.

  • One of the main things I've learned is the concept of restraint—not to lay everything out on the table, and if you do, don't do it all at once.  Be it character descriptions, plot, setting, whatever.  I can get all Tolkienish and describe everything down to a T if I wanted, but I'm purposefully forcing myself to hold back, especially more this time than with Dichotomy.  I have to let the plot speak for itself and back out of Edmund and Susan's minds a bit more.  Even though being in Ed's head is awesome.

  • Wow, I had no idea you could track traffic stats on ff.net.  The ratio of story hits to reviews is alarming!

Hooray! NFE Reveals are up!

I'll eventually post mine in other places, but here's the direct info, and a cut to my thoughts.  Many, many double thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lady_songsmith for both the story and her brilliant story for me!

Title: Dichotomy
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] turkeyish
Rating: PG-13
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: Mild swearing, adult themes
Summary:
“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to
kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.” —Carl G. Jung, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, 1962
——————
Original Prompt:
What I want: Edmund-centric.
Something to do with Jadis haunting him (whether just in his head or otherwise). Fencing. The relationship between brothers. The comparisons and contrasts between Narnia and England. The dichotomy between time periods. As far as tone - something quiet, somber, but not without hope.
Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
"...I will show you something different from either/Your shadow at
morning striding behind you/Or your shadow at evening rising to meet
you;/I will show you fear in a handful of dust." - T.S. Eliot
What I definitely don't want in my fic: Incest, slash, romance, sex, unhappy endings, OCs, Pevensie deaths, overt fluff or angst.

Well, I must say that this has been such an amazing experience.  Having gotten back into fanfiction earlier this spring, I knew it was going to be a big leap to jump from just a casual reader to OMG LET'S WRITE A 20K FIC.

More about the journey... )

In order for it to get done, and to add a little pressure, I'm putting this out to the world:

Sequel Info for Dichotomy
Working Title:  Fuel to Fire
Ridiculously Basic Synopsis: The fabled elephants of Southern Archenland have always been elusive.  Why are they there?  Are they beasts or are they Beasts?  Why all the sudden interest in them?

I won't go into much more.  Yet.  But this time, we're in both Edmund and Susan's heads, following their travels, adventures (and mis-adventures) while Peter takes a step back.  In the meantime, Lucy is busy trying to pry as much information from the Lone Elephant in Narnia...who is rather fond of the beach, as it turns out.

And now, time for a bit of feedback to the feedback from Dichotomy.  I need to talk, dammit!

So, my imagination has been on overdrive ever since I submitted my NFE.

My imagination led to a nugget, which led to a chunk, and now is exploding into a full blow plot. Heaven help me, I've started writing the sequel to my NFE.

Granted, work has slowed down considerably the past week and I now have plenty of free time. But I should be doing productive stuff... like work more on pre-production of next gig, or even tie up the loose ends of the last one. Not writing about [CENSORED] which takes place two years after [ALSO CENSORED] but this time in the point of view of [NOT SAYIN'].

Yee-ikes. I wish I could talk about it, but nooooo, reveals aren't for awhile. But it's so hard to keep bottled in!

My story landed, my story landed!

I mean the one that was written for me in the NFE...I'm not saying whether the one I wrote has landed or not!

Here it is and it is wonderful!  I was rather concerned about the quality of my prompt when I first sent it out (especially since I fell in love with the prompt that I received), but I needn't worry... the writer ingored the rubbish ideas and grasped on to exactly what I could have wished for.

I do hope said writer will be interested in extensive back-and-forth feedback once the reveals are up...I already wrote a review but it only is a fraction of what I want to say, and that's only after one read.  And I noticed from other years that a lot of the time, the dialogue within the reviews on stories kind of stops after the initial posting, which is rather sad.

So, Mystery Author, if you are reading this, let's talk later!
