I agree, the trope trap is an easy one to fall in. I'm rather close to following it, I noticed, but mine is about 80% based off of astrological signs. My first story was Edmund-centric, and you write what you know, so I made him a fellow Pisces. I arbitrarily gave Susan an October birthday to fit my Big Bang. I believe my original intention was to make her a Scorpio, another water sign, but during the beta process, rthstewart pointed out that I made her a Libra. Being rather unfamiliar with that sign, I looked it up and was pleased to see that, yep, Susan fits that.
There was no question to me that Peter is a Leo. I decided on July because August is my least favorite month. Lucy needed to be a rather dynamic sign, and I didn't want their birthdays to be so neatly spaced (trope alert!), so I decided she was an early February Aquarian. Other than that, I don't "connect" very well with Lucy, so I'm fine with wherever I put her!
